The Greater Melbourne Heat Alliance is a growing network of over 80 organisations working collaboratively to tackle the challenges of extreme heat across Melbourne, Australia. Our alliance brings together a diverse range of members — including community groups, health services, local and state governments, unions, and more — united by a shared commitment to building community resilience to heatwaves.
Our Purpose
We aim to improve Melbourne’s preparedness, response, and recovery from extreme heat events. By raising awareness about the risks of heat, advocating for stronger protections, and promoting equitable solutions, we’re working toward a future where all communities are safer and more resilient in the face of rising temperatures.
Who We Are
The Greater Melbourne Heat Alliance was launched in 2023 and is coordinated by Sweltering Cities, a health-focused NGO dedicated to heat safety and climate justice. Together, we focus on the root causes of heat vulnerability — including inequality, poor housing, and inadequate urban planning — and push for structural changes that protect the most at-risk.
What We Do
Our key activities include:
- Collaboration & Coordination
Bringing organisations together to improve heatwave preparedness, response, and recovery. - Advocacy
Raising public awareness and campaigning for policies that reduce heat risks and promote health equity. - Information Sharing
Facilitating the exchange of knowledge, resources, and best practices between alliance members and the broader community. - Community Engagement

Together, we are building a more heat-resilient Melbourne — one that protects the health, wellbeing, and rights of all its residents in a warming world.
